The anniversary of a miracle 🌟

By Lian Brook-Tyler

It was 6 years ago today that I had the operation that restored enough of my hearing that I can now manage without hearing aids (not that I managed particularly well with them).

It’s easy to take even miracles for granted after a while but I do my best not to.

I also aim to remember the gifts of being deaf… especially the way it provided the stillness that opened my other senses to the truth of life.

Tonight I walked at sunset and my heart sang with the beauty of it all, as it does when I see the moon, feel the warmth of a fire, smell a rose, or taste that first cup of tea. The sixth sense is one that I spent a lifetime terrified of - even that has finally become a gift of real magic.

Entirely worth those 15 years losing my hearing. And I’m so grateful to have it back.

“The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” - W.B. Yeats.
